Newquay Zoo Dragon Maze (1983)

In 1983, Dougal Dixon was commissioned by the Newquay Zoo (Cornwall, UK) to make ten sculptures of the creatures from After Man. These were used to populate the zoo's Dragon Maze - a hedge maze in the shape of a dragon (right) - which was designed by Adrian Fisher and Randall Coate. These sculptures were relatively small and included the Falanx, Gigantelope, Raboon, Rabbuck, and Wakka.^2,3

According to Dixon, they were commissioned to last for two years. They were removed after "a few years", and the maze soon became overgrown. It remained at the zoo until March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced its closure. It hasn't been open since.³
